October 9, 2024

A discussion with Prof. Emeritus Gregory Aldrete of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

A common form of protection for many ancient Mediterranean warriors, including Alexander the Great, was the linothorax, a type of body armor made out of linen. Employing only materials and techniques that would have been available in the ancient world, the Linothorax Project has used the techniques of experimental archaeology to reconstruct this armor and subject examples to attack with ancient weapons in order to determine its characteristics and protective qualities. This presentation will describe the project’s findings and display a complete reconstructed linothorax.
