Hispanic Studies Faculty and Student on WBEZ Chicago
Professor Margarita Saona (Hispanic Studies) and undergraduate student Alica Morel (UIC '25) were recently featured on WBEZ Chicago discussing the importance of language classes and experiences in the Hispanic Studies program.
“I wanted to take classes at UIC to … learn some vocabulary that isn’t Dominican slang or Salvadorean slang, [so] I could help other people all around the Hispanic community,” she said. Now Morel translates for customers at the Ravenswood grocery store where she is a cashier, helping them refill their prescriptions at the pharmacy or talk to customer service representatives.
