Coming Soon to Polish...

Late Spring, 2013: POLISH CULTURE SALON

This activity takes as its inspiration the 19th century salons of Warsaw or Petersburg, at which cultural works were shared and created in private homes. Students prepare cultural and culinary contributions to share with each other and invited guests at an evening salon, including musical  performances, dramatic readings of poetry, new translations of Polish poetry, demonstrations of traditional dance, PowerPoint presentations on topics in Polish culture and history, and a Polish buffet including contemporary and historical dishes.

Coming in Fall, 2013:

BROWN-BAG LUNCHES: Polish in Professional Life.
A series of monthly lunchtime seminars/informal discussions with invited individuals from the Chicago area who use Polish in their professional life, or who have chosen careers connected to Polish culture and politics.  Fields include:  Medicine, Government, Polish-language Radio and Television, Private Business, Law  & Courts, Museums & Cultural Institutions.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS & SUMMER STUDY in POLAND WORKSHOP.
The proposed seminar for students, offered once in the Fall term and once in the Spring term, will present options for internships and study-abroad programs offered in Poland during the summer months, and offer advice concerning preparation of applications.

INTERNSHIPS in Chicago-area Polish cultural institutions.
The department will work with the Internship office of LAS to develop a for-credit course involving supervised internship at a Chicago-area institution connected with Polish culture  (Ex: Museum, Newspaper/Radio, Grade School, Medical and Social Assistance). Department staff will assist students in establishing connections with potentially interested institutions, and maintain a database of contacts.
