Each spring the Department of Germanic Studies hosts High School Day at UIC. German teachers and their students from throughout the Chicago area come to UIC to participate in various German language competitions, to visit undergraduate German classes, and to take part in language games.

The event starts at 9:30 am and ends at approximately 1:30 pm.

Students compete in the following categories:

  • Poetry Recitation
  • Culture Essay
  • Skits in German
  • Spelling Bee
  • City Guide
  • Eindrücke von Amerika
  • Werbespot-Video
  • Program Cover Art Contest

 

Students are judged by a UIC panel in all categories and by Consular representatives, faculty and representatives of the Goethe Institut in the final round. Trophies are awarded to first, second, and third place in each category.

 

High school teachers have the opportunity to meet with the Department Head and Language Program Director over breakfast to talk about the current teaching situation at high schools and to discuss areas of cooperation between the schools and the Department of Germanic Studies.
