The event starts at 9:30 am and ends at approximately 1:30 pm.
Students compete in the following categories: Poetry Recitation, Culture Essay, Skits in German, Spelling Bee, City Guide, Eindrücke von Amerika, Werbespot-Video, and Program Cover Art Contest.
Students are judged by a UIC panel in all categories and by Consular representatives, faculty and representatives of the Goethe Institut in the final round. Trophies are awarded to first, second, and third place in each category.
High school teachers have the opportunity to meet with the Department Head and Language Program Director over breakfast to talk about the current teaching situation at high schools and to discuss areas of cooperation between the schools and the Department of Germanic Studies.
Who can participate?
All high school students learning German as a foreign language as well as students who are near-native speakers
(who lived for a couple of years in a German-speaking country, or who speak German at home) may attend. We have special categories for first-year students (City Guide) and near-native speakers (Eindrücke von Amerika
). Students who are not participating in the competitions can attend undergraduate language classes, participate in language games, and support their fellow students.
